Ultimately, We fly people, not planes. India is the world's fastest-growing aviation market. Domestic traffic increased fivefold in the last decade to 2013. International airlines and airports may find dealing with the Indian traveller part amusing and part disconcerting. Passengers jostling to get on and off before anyone else - just as if they were on a crowded local train - not switching off mobile phones, and wanting to take large pieces of luggage with them instead of checking them in. What these scenes symbolize, however, is the need to approach a society taking to the skies for the first time, with a cultural filter of design.
The advance of low-cost carriers and easy online ticketing has created a central tension between the price and service expectations of air travelers - wanting a first class air travel experience at just above railway ticket prices - and operator profitability - aircraft weight loss, faster turnaround times, adjustable flight plans and improved flight capacity utilization and reliability. This work requires empathy, vision and deep technical expertise, and an inclusive approach to create cohesive experiences for passengers and maximize efficiency and profitability for operators.
