The demand for global energy worldwide continues to increase. The International Energy Agency expects that daily global oil production will plateau by 2020, as total energy demand increases by more than 35% by 2035. At the same time India wishes to double its renewable energy capacity by 2017


Even as it tried to pull scores of people into modernity, India is largely dependent on fossil fuel imports to meet its energy demands — by 2030, India's dependence on energy imports is expected to exceed 53% of the country's total energy consumption. From scary watchdog statistics - and naysayers - to extravagant government promises, consumers receive mixed messages about energy and its various sources, that are at once exciting, confusing and often overwhelming.
Energy is essential to modern society. It powers homes, workplaces, transportation, and recreation. Even as people grow increasingly dependent on gas, electricity and water, these resources may not be as readily available as they now are. Energy conservation is a major policy objective, and utilities and energy businesses can change constraints into opportunities by providing solutions that enable people to build new relationships with energy. 
The good news is even resource starved consumers are positive about saving resources, according to our research in India. Yet, they expect business and the government, not themselves, to take the lead on the journey toward a low-energy home or factory, demanding less from the grid. For most consumers, cost is the only reason to reduce energy consumption. But functionality, technological simplicity, brands, and design take priority over saving energy and water when people purchase appliances.
Business as usual will not be an option for energy utilities in the future. To cope with discontinuity in their current revenue model and in the need to reduce consumption, they must seek new sources of revenues and profits in emerging related businesses. These include providing opportunities and services in microgeneration (for instance, small-scale wind turbines and solar panels on private homes and workplaces), “smart” applications (home area networks and energy storage devices), advanced metering infrastructure, and in monitoring appliances and electronics (energy-efficient white goods), rain water harvesting, as well as financing, insurance, and consulting services.
